‘Zwarte Piet’ known as ‘Black Face’ abroad, is a character in a carnivalesque celebration of Sinterklaas (basically Santaclaus) in NL. That takes place in november until december.
I grew up liking the festival, because it’s a children’s party. Children get sweets and presents. And there’s bright colors, rhymes and songs.
One childhood memory came up after contemplating racism these days: Sadly I remember myself enthusiastically pointing at a black person, thinking it was Zwarte Piet some time in the summer. I remember my mums shame and my own after I realised I’ve said something wrong. I even remember the person’s cranky expression. Very understandable.
How this ever became a tradition, i don’t care. And apart from it being a capitalist, commercial thing now: it’s fucking racist and it always has been.
For the past years people have been trying to adjust the celebration positively, but the opposing bullying side turned it into a soup of childish, racist, sourness. Because “children love Zwarte Piet” and “we cannot take this away from them”. This whole discussion makes me sick to the point that I think: if we can’t adjust it, then fucking sink Sinterklaas’ poluting steamship and tell the truth countrywide to all children.
Why not start a new, beautiful celebration of children. Where it’s not about spending money on piles of presents, racism and lies. But about celebrating the magical creativeness of children’s minds. I’m sure we can think of a great way to do that.
Now stop fucking whining about something that’s long past due and honor all children. Not only the white ones.
