A while ago I got a request from a dutch political punkband Antillectual to make the artwork for their next single Fever.
I made the artwork for the single, merchandise design and an animated video. This blog is about the video.

Is to get (more) into the subject to make the right visual translation. I listen to the song a couple of times while in different places and times. Just taking it in. With a couple of core-questions, like: what do I see, hearing this song; how do I make the video into a valuable extension to the song and help bring across the message in the most effective way?

The message is clearly outlined in the liner-notes: “Some say that climate change is the biggest problem of our generation. Denying climate change is the 21th century equivalent of saying the earth is flat. A changing climate is obviously our greatest threat: without a livable planet, there’s no human life possible and human problems are irrelevant. But what if we look at this problem a little different, a little less anthropocentric? …”

I was super exited that this was this issue I was about to visualize. The subject is very dear to me, because our planet is. Also the band’s approach to the subject seems exactly the way I see it.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”3125″ img_size=”large”][vc_column_text]

Some thoughts on the subject…

To planet Earth we are merely a sick part of its ecosystem, bringing disbalance in it’s health. We are not as important as we think we are. And whatever we do now may slow down the process of global warming, but we can not stop it.

“This is the END…”

Panicking and feeling sick of guilt, as well as denying the problem are a waste of valuable time. We can better get used to the idea of change and find back the true balance: that we are a part of this world: it’s not ‘our’ world. And that we are not God and we don’t have to be.

One thing is for sure. Even though we might not be able to ‘save’ the world as we know it. We definitely have to keep fighting to stop our species to be so damn polluting. We are digging our own grave. And worse: the grave of future generations and other species.

“.. of life and how it used to be..”

The making of

As for each animation project, I started out with the outlines of the story: We see our home-planet Earth, turning into quicksilver, becomes the thermometer, zoomed in. We follow the quicksilver up and up until it bursts. When we zoom out to see the thermometer recognizable, then the world. Among the sides we read the lyrics and see some of the results of global warming. In a hotter and hotter climate.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]While sketching the storyboard, I had already found the visual style to work with. I wanted to combine a raw, scruffy style with earthy colors. And the fonts I used were already chosen while working on the single artwork.

This way I started building something I wouldn’t know exactly how it would turn out. It’s a conciderably more creative way to work, than when you think through the video and make creative discisions upfront. The video grew quite organically as I was working on it. More and more details came to mind, as the temperatures rose towards the deadline.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”3126″ img_size=”medium” alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]To make such a video, you must listen it, and parts of it, countless times. I never got bored with the song “Fever” as it is well written and among my favorite kinds of music.

Hopefully this video will help spreading the word and consciousness about the state of the our species. And help people finding their own way to act on it. Just remember: we can (and must) surely grief for those things/beings that are lost. But this is not over. There’s many things to be gained with positive attitude and hope! Stay strong! We are all in this together.

“With the band going strong…”

Go find the band!

There’s much more where this came from! Support the band by buying their merchandise and music, so they can keep doing what they are going so good! And I would surely recommend to visit one of their shows! Find them via: antillectual.com

They also have a special page entirely dedicated to this song.
